If you are experiencing sound issues while using the app, there may be several causes. Please follow the steps below, which will help you address the most frequent causes.

1. Check device compatibility

Make sure your device is supported by visiting https://readingeggs.co.uk/technical-requirements/.

2. Check device sound settings

Make sure your device is not on silent (check the side mute switch).

Increase the volume using the side buttons while audio is playing.

Open Control Centre and confirm audio is playing through the correct output (e.g., iPhone speaker, not Bluetooth).

3. Check for iOS and app updates

Check for app updates: Visit the Apple App Store and search Reading Eggs to view if any updates are available.

Check for iOS updates: Go to Settings → General → Software Update and install any available iOS updates.

4. Keep the app in the foreground

Audio may pause or mute if the app is sent to the background or App Switcher is activated. While you cannot disable the App Switcher entirely, the following steps can prevent interruptions:

Avoid swiping up from the bottom edge of the screen.

Keep the app open and visible on screen while in use.

5. Enable Background App Refresh

Go to Settings → General → Background App Refresh and make sure it is enabled.

6. Turn off Focus / Do Not Disturb

Go to Settings → Focus and temporarily turn off any active modes while using the app.

This issue sometimes occurs when other apps seize control and mute the Reading Eggs app. There are a couple of easy solutions to this issue which vary depending on the model of your iPad.

For newer iPads (iPad Air, iPad Pro):

  • Open the Reading Eggs app
  • Swipe up from the bottom or top-right corner to open Control Centre
  • Find the bell-shaped mute icon (it will have a line through it if muted)
  • Tap the bell to unmute; sound should return

For older iPads:

  • Open the Settings app
  • Go to General → Use Side Switch to
  • Switch the setting between Mute and Lock Rotation
  • Make sure the side switch is not in the mute position
  • Reopen the app; sound should play as intended

8. Disable power-saving features

Low Power Mode can prevent background audio from continuing.

Go to Settings → Battery and turn Low Power Mode off.

9. Restart the app
